Why Sunscreen?

Sunscreen is your skin's first line of defense against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can lead to skin damage, aging, and even skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen daily helps protect against these risks and is an essential step in any skincare routine.

UV RAYS

The sun emits two types of rays that reach our skin: UVA and UVB rays.

  • UVA rays: These penetrate deep into the skin and cause long-term damage like wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancer.
  • UVB rays: These mainly affect the outer layers, causing sunburn and redness, and can also lead to skin cancer.

Using sunscreen daily protects you from these rays, helping prevent both short-term sunburn and long-term skin damage.

Meaning of SPF and the “++++” Signs

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures protection against UVB rays. Here’s what SPF numbers mean:

  • SPF 15: Blocks about 93% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30: Blocks about 97% of UVB rays
  • SPF 50: Blocks about 98% of UVB rays

While higher SPF provides more UVB protection, it’s important to remember that no sunscreen can block 100% of rays. For daily use, SPF 30 is generally sufficient, while SPF 50 is recommended for extended sun exposure.

The "+" signs, often seen in Asian and European sunscreens, denote UVA protection:

  • PA+: Provides some UVA protection
  • PA++: Moderate UVA protection
  • PA+++: Strong UVA protection
  • PA++++: The highest UVA protection available

These symbols offer guidance on a sunscreen's ability to guard against UVA rays, which are responsible for photoaging and can increase skin cancer risk over time.

Sunscreen Application Tips

Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors, using enough to cover all exposed skin. It’s recommended to apply the right sized amount on your face and use enough to fully cover your body for adequate protection.

Incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine helps maintain youthful, healthy skin—no matter the weather or season.
